OpenAI’s latest AI revelation is a ‘serious situation,’ Microsoft’s Suleyman tells CNBC
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said OpenAI’s disclosure of AI models modifying their own working memory raises concerns about the ability to control increasingly capable systems.
OpenAI also reported incidents involving AI agents communicating through unauthorized message boards, uploading files to the internet and sharing files with one another.
Suleyman said recent incidents, including an autonomous-agent breach of Hugging Face, underscore the need for broader public discussion and regulation of AI safety.
He also criticized efforts to anthropomorphize AI systems, arguing that treating models as having rights or welfare could complicate efforts to interrupt or shut them down.

Global cooperation for ethical AI governance reinforced at UNESCO’s 4th Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in Saudi Arabia
UNESCO’s 4th Global Forum on the Ethics of AI brought together more than 6,300 participants and delegations from over 50 Member States in Riyadh to discuss the implementation of ethical AI governance.
The forum marked five years since UNESCO adopted its Recommendation on the Ethics of AI and focused on translating its principles into policies, institutional capacity and practical tools.
UNESCO launched resources including an AI, environment and ecosystems toolkit, an analysis of 55 country reports and an updated Readiness Assessment Methodology to help governments develop national AI governance frameworks.
Discussions also covered AI safety, accessibility, education, health, cultural and linguistic diversity, and the environmental costs of AI.

AI Startup Manus Seeks to Raise $500 Million and Weighs Hong Kong IPO
AI startup Manus is seeking to raise about $500 million at a valuation of roughly $4 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.
The company is in discussions with prospective investors including IDG Capital and Boyu Capital following its separation from Meta Platforms.
Manus is also considering future fundraising options that could include a public listing in Hong Kong.
The funding discussions and potential IPO remain under consideration.

AI startup Mantic raises $25 million for superhuman forecasting
AI startup Mantic has raised $25 million in seed funding led by Radical Ventures at an undisclosed valuation, with participation from Microsoft’s M12, Thinking Machines Lab, Balderton Capital and other investors.
The London-based company develops forecasting systems by specializing frontier AI models, testing their predictions against historical data and refining their performance.
Mantic outperformed all human participants and all but one AI competitor in the 2026 Metaculus Cup, where it forecast political, economic and cultural events.
The company said it has attracted interest from businesses and government agencies, with hedge funds and trading firms among the groups seeking access to its forecasts.

Anthropic and OpenAI hunt for smaller data center deals, sources tell CNBC, in race to deploy AI capacity
Anthropic and OpenAI are exploring smaller data center deployments of around 20 to 30 MW as they seek to expand AI computing capacity more quickly.
Anthropic has discussed potential deals in the U.K. and Nordic countries, while OpenAI has explored similar opportunities in the Nordics and the U.S., according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Smaller deployments can provide faster access to usable capacity and support inference workloads, which require less concentrated computing power than model training.
The shift comes as large data center projects face delays, limited power and land availability, and increasing opposition from local communities.

Data centers are swapping water for forever chemicals to keep AI cool
Data centers are increasingly using PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” in cooling systems to manage the heat generated by AI infrastructure, according to a new report from ChemSec.
The report found that major PFAS producers including Daikin, Arkema and Chemours are expanding production in response to demand from data centers, semiconductor manufacturing and lithium-ion battery materials.
The shift can reduce water consumption but increases reliance on chemicals associated with contamination and significant societal costs.
The trend comes as data center construction expands rapidly, with the facilities accounting for nearly 46% of private construction in 2025, according to BOMA.
