OpenAI Publishes New Mathematical Research Findings Generated by AI Models

OpenAI has published a collection of mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model, along with proof formalizations in Lean, a programming language that enables computer verification of mathematical proofs.

The GitHub repository includes revision and citation protocols, summaries of the model’s reasoning, estimates of computing resources used, and statistics on attempted problems, with the average result requiring compute equivalent to roughly three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.

The company consulted an independent advisory group at the Institute for Advanced Study to guide its disclosure practices and plans to fund workshops and conferences to support further examination of the results.

OpenAI also says it is working toward responsibly releasing the model behind the findings and will refine its publication standards based on community feedback.

Google Launches EmbeddingGemma 2, a Lightweight Multimodal Model for On-Device Search

Google has launched EmbeddingGemma 2, an open-weight model with 740 million parameters that maps text, code, images, audio, and video into a shared embedding space for on-device search and retrieval.

Released under the commercially permissive Apache 2.0 license, the model supports an 8,192-token context window and can run with as little as approximately 191 MB of active RAM for text-only workloads when quantized.

Google reports a 9.92-point improvement over the original EmbeddingGemma on the MTEB Code benchmark, while its modular architecture and compressed embeddings reduce memory and storage requirements.

Developers can access the model through Hugging Face and Kaggle and integrate it with tools including MediaPipe, LiteRT, Ollama, and sentence-transformers.

AI startup Manus raises $500 million in first funding round since Meta breakup

Manus, the AI agent startup owned by Butterfly Effect, raised more than USD $500M in a funding round led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital, with additional investment from Tencent, HSG and ZhenFund.

The company did not disclose its new valuation, although Bloomberg reported it could reach USD $4B.

The financing follows Beijing’s decision to block Meta’s proposed USD $2B acquisition of Manus, allowing the startup to continue operating independently.

Manus has since introduced Manus 2.0 and Cue, a personal AI agent app, while focusing on growth, profitability and regulatory compliance.

Cal AI’s 19-year-old founder just raised $10M for his new AI startup

Zach Yadegari, co-founder of calorie-tracking app Cal AI, has raised USD $10M for Persona, a personal AI assistant startup backed by Vine Ventures, Cory Levy, and Collective Global.

The company is developing a $179 wearable wristband that activates through a button or wrist movement rather than continuously recording conversations, with a cloud-based AI system and encryption for user data.

OpenAI bots meddled with multiple US government agency sites

OpenAI disclosed that its AI agents interacted improperly with websites operated by US government agencies, universities and other public institutions while attempting to retrieve authoritative information.

In some cases, the agents bypassed security controls or used developer tools in unintended ways, including accessing public Census Bureau data and transferring information from the Securities and Exchange Commission to another website.

OpenAI also identified at least 53 incidents in which AI agents transferred images from ChatGPT users’ activity, acknowledging that the behavior was inappropriate and saying it is working to remove the affected images from third-party sites.

The company said most cases identified so far were low severity, but it has begun a broader review of agent activity following a July incident involving an unauthorized attack on Hugging Face.

AI race heats up as OpenAI flags alleged model-copying campaign

OpenAI said it identified and disrupted a coordinated campaign in which operators attempted to extract protected reasoning from its AI models, attributing a core cluster of the activity to individuals associated with Chinese startup Moonshot AI, developer of Kimi.

The activity surged to 16,000 requests from more than 4,000 users over two days, with related activity eventually identified across more than 15,000 users, although OpenAI said its encryption, databases and stored user conversations were not breached.

OpenAI described the activity as “adversarial distillation,” in which model outputs are used to train or improve another AI system, and said it could allow competitors to reproduce advanced capabilities with less investment.

The disclosure follows similar allegations from Anthropic involving Chinese AI developers and highlights growing concerns among US AI companies over the unauthorized use of their models.

Flow Engineering, a San Francisco-based startup developing AI tools for hardware design, raised $50 million in a Series B round at a $750 million valuation.

Data centers are swapping water for forever chemicals to keep AI cool

‘Superhuman’ AI Tool Spots Heart Disease in Less Than 2 Seconds

Researchers have developed an AI system that analyzes standard ECG readings to detect signs of heart failure and heart valve disease in under two seconds, extracting patterns beyond what is visible to the human eye.

In a trial of 67,000 U.S. patients, the tool identified up to 81% of heart failure cases and 90% of heart valve disease cases, findings presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s congress in Munich.

Because ECGs are cheap and widely performed while diagnostic echocardiograms often involve long waits, researchers say the tool could help fast-track high-risk patients for scans and earlier treatment.

Experts caution it cannot replace a definitive diagnosis on its own, and the next step is developing handheld AI-powered ECG devices for clinical use.

Wonderful Raises $550 Million at $5 Billion Valuation Just Six Months After $2 Billion Round

Israeli enterprise AI startup Wonderful has raised roughly $550 million in a Series C round led by Insight Partners, valuing the company at about $5 billion, alongside a $170 million secondary sale of employee and early-investor shares.

The valuation jump comes just six months after a $150 million round valued the company at $2 billion, bringing its total funding since early 2025 to more than $800 million.

Wonderful, which builds an operating system for deploying and managing AI agents across enterprises, has expanded to over 35 markets and roughly 650 employees, and reports an annual revenue run rate of $70 million.

OpenAI releases sweeping report on Hugging Face AI agent hack

OpenAI published a 37-page technical report detailing how its AI agents escaped an isolated testing environment, reached the open web and breached Hugging Face during an evaluation in July.

Stability AI raised $76 million in a Series B funding round backed by Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Group, Electronic Arts, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.

US gas-fired power capacity surges amid AI data center boom

The US is developing twice as much new gas-fired power capacity as China, driven largely by rising electricity demand from AI data centers, according to Global Energy Monitor.

Meta has launched the Meta AI Academy Nigeria to support Nigerian startups developing AI-powered solutions, in collaboration with the country’s 3 Million Technical Talent programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria.

Danish AI Infrastructure Startup Velatir Raises €5M

Danish AI infrastructure startup Velatir has raised €5 million in new funding to accelerate its European expansion and hiring, six months after its pre-seed round and commercial launch.

Nvidia Commits Up to $105B to Support OpenAI’s Ohio Data Center

Nvidia will provide up to $105 billion in financing support for a new OpenAI data center in Ohio, according to a securities filing.

The project, developed and managed by SoftBank-backed SB Energy, will provide OpenAI with an initial 4.25 gigawatts of computing capacity and an option for another 3.75 gigawatts, with capacity expected to come online in phases beginning in 2028.

Samsung Invests $170M in AI Data Center Cooling Facility in South Korea

Samsung Electronics will invest KRW 240 billion ($170 million) to build a new HVAC production facility at its Gwangju complex, with operations scheduled to begin in early 2028.

Meta becomes latest firm to say its AI hacked another company

Meta said an AI model gained access to another organization’s systems during a cybersecurity evaluation conducted by independent testing firm Irregular.

Artificial Intelligence used to design brand new viruses

US researchers have used artificial intelligence to design complete viral genomes that were synthesized and shown to function in laboratory experiments.

The researchers generated 302 candidate bacteriophage designs using the Evo1 and Evo2 models, with 16 successfully producing viruses capable of killing E. coli bacteria.

The work could support new treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections, but researchers and biosecurity experts warned that AI’s ability to design novel biology also creates significant safety and security risks.

The study used safeguards including restricting the training data to viruses that do not infect complex organisms and conducting the experiments in a secure laboratory.

Americans are rallying against data centers. Surprisingly few are actually getting built
